Journal #72: Day Thirty… The Power Of Music

Join the journey with me… Jen’s 2015 Musical Vision Quest RocketHub Campaign!

Where did this day go? So, I just got in, a little bit ago, from my monthly Musicians on Call volunteer gig where I get to deliver the healing power of music to patients in health care facilities in NYC.

Tonight I was at a nursing home. I sang my songs to forty five patients. It’s funny, you never do know how much your being there means to each one of them. But one thing’s for sure. I know what their being there does for me!

It gets me out of myself and into the solution of life; being of service to others. I get to experience absolute humility, serenity and joy. There’s not a thought about if any of these patients will remember my name, if they’ll friend me on facebook or tweet about me on twitter. No, there’s no need for them to join my mailing list or buy my next album or any of my music, for that matter.

Nope! I get to dive into anonymity and there is so much freedom in that. Yes indeed, freedom! Being a part of MOC allows me to spread love for love’s sake.

You know, making money from doing music alone is my goal. Yet, without humility, the possibility to create longevity as a singer-songwriter is kinda lost. We all need human connection. And true human connection is hard to fine these days. And when we find someone who can gives us that, we engulf it. And I believe what brings people to gravitate towards another is an equal mix of humilty and vulnerability.

I mean, think about it. Why do you like the artists you do? It’s cause there’s something real that connects you to them. Good, bad, indifferent… It’s real. And to be real, to be yourself, you need to stay grounded in humility and you need to get comfortable with being vulnerable day in and day out.

So, pretty much, I need Musicians on Call as much as they need me and my music! Yup… Life is a give and take. I cannot keep the gifts I’ve been given as a songwriter if I am not willing to be generous and give it away every chance I get to those who do need it.

Anyway, that was just on my mind after returning from my MOC experience tonight, so I thought I’d share it with you on Day 30 of this vision quest journey!

More to come…
